This is a terrific account of close in fire fight after fire fight. The reader travels along with troops on one endless hump after endless hump. The soul crushing heat and humidity , clever booby traps designed to mutilate , Monsoons bringing relentless rain, day and night soaked to the bone. Rain so vicious you can't see or hear the NVA ,5 feet from your face. Giant Tigers stalking our soldiers as they stalk the NVA. All of the above why Leeches feast without end. Close friends mutilated and killed ,why survivors push on ,no time to morn, just stay in the fight. In closing I was a Marine grunt chasing the VC 1965 / 66 . We carried M14's and never came out of the field never! There was no rear area resupply was a joke. Absolutely no Huey's , our uniforms rotted off and we were expected to fix them with com wire . I guess it was a different war?

Run Through the Jungle Real Adventures in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Audible Audio Edition) Larry J Musson David Drummond Tantor Audio Books Reviews
Larry Musson makes it sound like his tour in Vietnam was a stroll in the park, almost a fun adventure. From what I’ve learned from veterans and have read, it was hell. Vietnam was not a conventional war. It was difficult not only to find the enemy, sometimes they could not tell who the enemy was.
Larry is lucky to have come back. Radio field operators where main targets to the VC, together with senior officers. I would have guessed he was under constant fire buy yet it appears he spent more time in the barracks watching movies.
If this subject really interests you, I’d suggest to read Hero Found by Bruce Henderson and The Boys from 67 by Andrew Wiest.
Though not a professional writer and with spotty editing, if you want a book that tells it like it was fighting in the jungles of Vietnam this is your book. With no personal aggrandizement or politicizing, the experiences of this courageous soldier and his comrades will fill you with joy and sadness. Many gave their lives fighting in a war they thought their nation wanted them to pursue only to be abandoned in the end. Musser is a hero, along with many others in this tale. Imperfect people do imperfect things in combat, but the author lays it all bare. Many got medals for their dedication and sacrifice but many did not. My return from Vietnam was flawed just as his was. We owe it to those brave ones to read this story of the Army trying to pursue a war of attrition with draftees and city kids. Musser gives us a lot to think about.
Having served in Vietnam, this is one of the best truly realistic accounts of an army enlisted man's experience with twelve months of serving and surviving as a combat infantryman who becomes an expert radioman for a platoon, company and eventually battalion commander. He experiences combat as a squad leader and patrol leader, and observes the competent and incompetent leadership of platoon leaders, company commanders and battalion commanders. It is well-written without the continuos cussing slang and bad language of many Vietnam books, although there is an occasional use of foul language at times, especially in the heat of combat. But it depicts the life of an infantryman in a sometimes boring war and at times the dangers of a firefight while pursuing Vietcong and NVA enemy soldiers. Comrades are wounded and some killed but it is captured in a way that seems so real to the reader. Finally, it depicts, at times, the issue of military procedures and protocols that can be frustrating and politically motivated. This is a terrific read. Mr. Musson has captured his war experiences beautifully!
I enjoyed reading Larry Musson's account of his year in Vietnam surviving as a member of an army airborne unit in the bush. Sgt Musson's writing style reads so easily and brings you along with him on his journey. Overall a great balance of small daily events and dangerous moments fighting the enemy. His story shares his frustrations with incompetent leaders and mistakes made that put at risk soldiers lives. Yet He tells of good leaders and sacrifices made by many with men wounded and killed fighting for each other. A wonderful book ! Thanks Larry for sharing your story with us.
If you're looking fora Vietnam War piece written by a scholar, keep looking because Musson's book isn't it. Not that he didn't do a fair job of documenting the events paired with his responses occurring during his tour, because he gets that done. Sometimes he gets his grammar crossed up, and he retells some things here and there. Also he comes across as a bit of an omniscient storyteller -- he tells of knowing how things are going to turn out before relating events that prove him right. Just about everybody thinks that way but when you put it in writing, over and over, it starts sounding a little too smug. But so what? The guy wrote what he saw, thought, did and felt, and he wrote it with apparent honesty and objectivity. I like that. Nothing's sensationalized, there's no preaching, there's no flashy "realism". I've read a boatload of books about Vietnam and I'd say this one ranks up there with the best.
Very detailed and easily read book. The accounts of the combat assaults and daily humping in the jungle are vividly told. His detailed descriptions of the combat actions are intensely written. I like the honest way he relates the "questionable" decisions of the officers in ordering the deployment and their disregard for the danger which was apparent to the seasoned but lesser ranking men like the PFCs, Spec4 and Corporals in the platooon or company. They possess a "I'm the officer" attitude that often led to unnecessary casualties. Mr. Musson relates these events without a personal by justfied dose of "I told them so". All in all a easily read and informative book.
I was impressed by the authors straight forward presentation. Many of the other Vietnam memoirs I have read the author has used to brag about his own great feats, whereas this author presented a good story line that was not a braggers tribute to himself. I was a little disappointed to find out the girlfriend married someone else, but that was quite common and continues to happen all to often to our military people who have to be away on duty.
